What is the Graston Technique?

The Graston Technique is a form of therapy that treats acute and chronic soft tissue injuries. The therapy is known as soft tissue instrument-assisted mobilization.

During treatment, your provider uses a special instrument to break down the scar tissue that develops from soft tissue injuries. This process reduces inflammation and pain and restores mobility to the injured area.

The Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation team uses the Graston Technique along with other therapies to ease pain, promote healing, and help their patients get back to their active lifestyle.

How does the Graston Technique work?

When using the Graston Technique, your provider at Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation places a stainless steel instrument on your skin, which combs over and catches on the scarred tissue. This combing and catching helps your provider identify the exact location of the injury causing restrictions in mobility.

Your provider then uses the instrument to break up the scar tissue, which your body then reabsorbs.

The Graston Technique allows the team at Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation to treat soft tissue injuries with the depth, pressure, and specificity needed to treat the condition at the site of the pain.

More specifically, the Graston Technique breaks down the scar tissue that results from an injury or trauma, reduces restrictions by stretching and rearranging the soft tissue, and promotes a better environment for healing.

The team then incorporates stretching, strengthening, and icing to support the healing process, helping to rebuild healthy functioning tissue.
